MLA Purnima Sahu Corners Govt Over Delayed JTET Exams

Ranchi/Jamshedpur: During the short-notice question hour in the Jharkhand Assembly, Jamshedpur East MLA Purnima Sahu mounted a fierce attack on the state government regarding the non-conduct of the Jharkhand Teacher Eligibility Test (JTET). The confrontation highlighted a major administrative lapse: while a High Court deadline of March 31, 2026, looms large, the government has yet to even finalize the exam regulations.

Key Admissions by the Government

In response to MLA Sahu’s queries, the government made several critical admissions on the floor of the House:

  • Decade of Inaction: No JTET exam has been conducted in Jharkhand since 2016.

  • Court Commitment: In the case of Harikesh Mahto & Others vs. State Government (W.P.(S) No. 5355/2025), the government filed an affidavit promising the High Court to conduct the exam by March 31, 2026.

  • Pending Regulations: Despite the deadline being less than 20 days away, the government admitted that while the draft of the Niyamawali (regulations) is ready, it is still awaiting approval from the “competent level.”

MLA Purnima Sahu slammed the government’s response as “shameful and worrisome.” She questioned the mathematical possibility of holding a state-wide exam in under three weeks when the rules haven’t even been approved.

“On one hand, the government promises the High Court a March 31 deadline. On the other, they haven’t approved the rules yet. How can you finalize regulations, invite applications, and conduct an exam in just 20 days?” Sahu questioned.

She further alleged that in 2024, the government invited applications only to postpone the exam under the pretext of making new rules. Sahu accused the administration of not only playing with the future of the state’s youth but also showing contempt for the High Court’s orders.
