Jamshedpur: In a proactive step towards addressing the critical issue of mental health among students, Jeevan, a renowned suicide prevention centre, conducted a workshop at Arka Jain University. The workshop aimed to equip around 130 students pursuing B Com and Mass Communication courses with essential skills to understand, manage, and prevent stress, while also emphasizing the importance of mental well-being. The initiative was particularly noteworthy as suicide prevention found its place in the orientation program for new admissions, highlighting the university’s commitment to fostering a supportive and mentally healthy campus environment.
During the workshop, Jeevan’s team facilitated a session on ‘Understanding and Handling Stress.’ This session was led by an expert in the field, Gurpreet Kaur Bhatia, who shed light on the significance of mental fitness, stressors identification, and the physical and emotional changes that accompany stress. The students were actively engaged in discussions, gaining insights into managing stress effectively in their academic and personal lives.
One of the main focuses of the workshop was to eliminate the stigma surrounding conversations about mental health. Students were encouraged to openly discuss their challenges and seek support when needed. The faculty members and program coordinators present at the event lauded the comprehensive and compassionate approach adopted by Jeevan’s team.
Laxmi, a representative from Jeevan, conducted a stress audit to gauge the students’ stress levels. She also provided them with stress relief strategies, which were outlined in handy informational sheets. Another team member, Madhuri, managed the distribution and collection of feedback forms, ensuring a smooth flow of the workshop.
Post-workshop discussions between Jeevan’s officials and the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Razi, revealed a shared commitment to mental health advocacy. Prof. Razi extended his support by agreeing to display a prominent board on campus featuring Jeevan’s contact details. This strategic move aims to provide easy access to support resources for any student in need.
Arka Jain University’s collaboration with Jeevan is a positive stride towards creating a supportive environment for its students. By prioritizing mental health education and suicide prevention, the university is taking an essential step in nurturing well-rounded, resilient, and empowered individuals.
