JDU Slams Mango Municipal Corporation Over Chronic Water Crisis

Jamshedpur: A Janata Dal (United) delegation, led by East Singhbhum District General Secretary Kulwinder Singh Pannu, submitted a memorandum to the Mango Municipal Commissioner on Friday, demanding the immediate resolution of the escalating water crisis and other civic issues in the area.

The JDU delegation painted a grim picture of basic amenities within the Mango Municipal Corporation (MMC) limits, terming the current state of drinking water supply as “dreadful.”

Acute Water Shortage Gripping Mango

The memorandum highlighted that a majority of neighbourhoods in Mango no longer receive regular or adequate drinking water.

  • Erratic Timings: Several localities get water supply only once a day, lasting a mere 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Late-Night Supply: In many areas, the corporation releases water only late at night, causing immense hardship to women, senior citizens, and working professionals who struggle to store it.
  • Low Pressure: Severe low-pressure issues mean water fails to reach households at the tail-end of the distribution network, forcing residents to face a full-blown drinking water crisis.

Collapsing Waste Management and Sanitation

The JDU delegation also expressed deep concern over the crumbling door-to-door garbage collection system.

Due to the civic body’s failure to collect trash regularly across multiple wards, piles of garbage have accumulated in public spaces. This negligence has triggered a foul stench and raised the immediate risk of infectious diseases. Furthermore, the delegation noted that workers rarely sweep internal neighbourhood lanes, while choked, overflowing drains continue to create unhygienic conditions throughout the township.

Demands for Transparency in Streetlight Maintenance

The memorandum also raised serious questions regarding irregularities in the allocation and maintenance of streetlights. The party has urged the civic body to publicly disclose the exact locations where streetlights—funded via government resources, MLA funds, and MP funds—have been installed.

The JDU demanded that the corporation repair all non-functional streetlights on a war footing and install new ones in poorly lit zones to ensure public safety. The delegation warned the Municipal Commissioner of intensifying public protests if the administration fails to address these grievances swiftly.
