Criminal arrested following gun battle in Gurugram

Wife too nabbed in an encounter, fugitive injured, admitted at hospital

Jamshedpur/Gurugram, Oct 11: In a major breakthrough, gangster Akhilesh Singh was arrested by a joint team of Haryana and Jharkhand police at Gurugram in Haryana following an encounter at a guest-house early Wednesday morning.

The don sustained bullet injuries in both of his legs and has been admitted at a local hospital for treatment at Gurugram .

Besides Akhilesh (39), his wife Garima Singh was also arrested from the guest-house where the encounter took place. She was arrested as there was a cheating case pending against her in Gurugram .

Deputy inspector general (DIG), Kolhan, Saket Kumar Singh confirmed about the arrest of Akhilesh Singh at Gurugram this morning.

“Yes it is a major achievement for us. Acting on an information, a joint team of Gurugram police and Jharkhand police entered over a guest-house near DLF Colony in Gurugram at about 4 am today. On fearing arrest, the gangster who was along with his wife at the guest-house had opened fire at the police. The police retaliated and the gangster sustained two shots in both of his legs. He was rushed to a local hospital for treatment,” said the DIG.

Singh said the East Singhbhum superintendent of police (Rural) Prabhat Kumar was leading the Jharkhand police team. He said the gangster has been arrested along with his wife for opening firing at the police.

“We will bring the gangster in transit remand from Gurugram later when he overcomes the gun-shot injuries.

A police team headed by Gurugram Deputy Commissioner of Police Sumit Kumar and Jamshedpur Superintendent of Police Phrabhat Kumar cordoned off a guest house in DLF area early in the morning, Gurugram Commissioner of Police Sandeep Khirwar said.

The criminal was staying there with a 25-year-old woman he claimed to be his wife.
“In a bid to escape, Akhilesh Singh opened fire at the police team. The police retaliated and Singh got two gun shots in his legs,” Khirwar told reporters.

The criminal had reached the guest house on Tuesday night.

Akhilesh is accused in more than 50 cases of grievous crime. Some of the major cases registered against him include murder of Prison guard (Jailor) Umashankar Pandey, Paramjeet Singh, Businessmen Owner of Sreeleathers Ashish Dey, Jairam Singh, firing on Judge RP Ravi, firing on former District Congress President Ravindra Kumar Jha alias Nattu Jha, on former minister Banna Gupta, ex Police Station officer Arvind Singh, Kabra murder along with extortion money from transporters and businessmen.

Meanwhile, his father Chandragupt Singh said he came to know about his son’s gun-shot injuries and arrest from the TV news.

” I can easily say that the Jharkhand police team which was after Akhilesh must have tried to kill him, but due to the objection by the Haryana police, the former had shot him in the legs,” said Singh at his residence in Sidhgora today.

Singh who is also a Ajsu leader when asked, said that his son had in the past offered to join the mainstream and had even submitted a written petition before the state police, but his proposal was not accepted.

Singh who is serving a life sentence in connection with the Sakchi jailer Uma Shanker Pandey murder case, has more than 50 cases registered against him under IPC section 302, 120B, 27 Arms Act, Extortion sections 364A, 25 1 BA, 34, 35, 224, 225, 387,307, 323, 384, 386, 353, 427, 109. 506, 452, 25, 26, 27, Arms Act 35, 114 and 115.

It may be noted that Jamshedpur police was confident of arresting notorious gangster Akhilesh Singh ever since his mentor mentor Vikram Sharma (45), who was absconding since 2008, was arrested by the city police from Dehradun in Uttarakhand in April 2017. The police managed to nab Sharma after they had stumbled upon a bag containing the documents of properties the gangster had accumulated in various cities, including Dehradun.

It may also be noted that after executing a `kurki-jabti� warrant by attaching movable properties of gangster Akhilesh Singh at his father�s residence in Sidhgora in December 2016, the district police have sent two separate teams to Noida and another unknown location to hunt Akhilesh Singh.

Police was prompted to take the step against Akhilesh after his name figured in an FIR in connection with the Upendra Singh murder case registered with the Sitaramdera police station. In the FIR lodged by Kundan Kumar Singh, the gangster Akhilesh was the conspirator of the murder and three others, namely Harish Singh, Binod Singh and Sonu Singh had executed the murder plan.

Son of Chandragupt Singh, former general secretary of Jharkhand Police Association, Akhilesh set up a network extortionists and shooters, which was spread well across Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.

Sources in the underworld revealed that the fugitive has amassed crores or rupees by perpetuating the criminal activities, which was focused on the `extortion� from the businessmen and traders, and even the corporate houses.

He used to run his `business� through a syndicate of criminals which has an effective strength of over 100 members. He has even invested the money earned from the extortions in real estate business in Jamshedpur and several other cities in Jharkhand and Bihar.

The 38-year-old don stepped into the crime world by abducting the merchant Om Prakash Kabra on July 21, 2001. After his name figured in the Kabra abduction case, he had surrendered in the court on August 6, 2001.

He fled the judicial custody on February 18, 2002. He was arrested from Varanasi on October 7, 2004.
