Jamshedpur’s Brahmananda Hospital completes 3000 heart surgeries

Jamshedpur, Dec. 15: In a rare feat, the department of Cardiac surgery of the Brahamananda Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Jamshedpur has completed 3000 cardiac operations successfully. With this, the hospital has achieved another milestone in the field of healthcare in the city of Jamshedpur.

Brahamananda Narayana Multispeciality Hospital is a unit of Narayana Health, Bangalore in association with Brahamanada Sewa Sadan of Jamshedpur, is established by Dr Devi Shetty, a renowned cardiac surgeon, BNMH is a state-of-art super speciality hospital run by highly qualified and trained doctors and paramedical staff.

This is a World-class facility which is now available locally to the people of Jharkhand. Patients need not travel to distant metropolitan cities of India to avail heart-care facilities. Moreover, often heart disease strikes like a “bolt from the blue”, giving patients little time to travel. Previously, many such patients succumbed to their disease for want of good facilities, locally. The unit was planned as a Millennium gift to the city of Jamshedpur in particular and Jharkhand in general.

The hospital started cardiac surgical program in 2009 and on 31st July 2009, Dr Perwaiz Alam, Senior Consultant cardiac surgeon, along with his team performed the first open heart surgery, which was the milestone surgery in Jamshedpur as it also stood to be the first heart surgery of this city and thus started a new era in the medical history of Jamshedpur.

Dr Perwaiz Alam, senior consultant cardiac surgeon, and his team have now completed 3000 cardiac Operations last month, in a short span of just more than twelve year with a success rate of  97.9%. This comprises 1276 bypass surgery, 857 valve surgery, 766 congenital heart surgery (heart disease in children since birth) , 57 vascular surgery and 44 thoracic and other close heart procedures. Paediatric cardiac surgery, which a challenging sub speciality of heart surgery requiring highest degree of skill and technical expertise and very advanced infrastructure  working cohesively with team of cardiac surgeon, Pediatric cardiologist and Pediatric intensivist was also started 8 years back for those children who have  heart defects since birth, and  required corrective surgeries on their heart to make them normal.

Out of 3000 patients, 1877 were from Jharkhand, 594 from West Bengal, 376 from Orissa, 123 from Bihar, 26 from Uttar Pardesh.  There are 4 patient from neighbour contries, 1 each from Nepal, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Yemen. There were 56 NRIs, basically from Jamshedpur and neighbour state, which were staying abroad but got operation done at BNH, because of cost implication.
