Jamshedpur, June 10: A 23-year-old youth from Jamshedpur reportedly drowned while bathing in the Subarnarekha River near the famous Jaida Temple in Chandil block of Seraikela-Kharsawan district late Monday evening. The missing youth has been identified as Prem Kumar, also known as Ballu, a resident of Zone No. 2, Sidhu-Kanhu Basti in Panchvati Nagar under the Sonari police station area. Search operations were continuing till the filing of this report, but no trace of him had been found.
According to information received, Prem Kumar had gone to the Chandil area on a bike with his friend Ashudev Kumar on Monday. The two reportedly spent time together during the trip before reaching Jaida Temple in the evening. After parking their bike near the temple premises, they walked down to the Subarnarekha River ghat located below the temple.
Sources said both friends removed their clothes near the steps of the ghat, following which Prem Kumar entered the river for a bath. Ashudev Kumar remained on the riverbank and was reportedly recording a video on his mobile phone. Initially, everything appeared normal, but within a short time Prem Kumar moved towards deeper water and began drowning.
Seeing his friend struggling in the river, Ashudev shouted for help and tried to rescue him. However, due to the late evening hours and the absence of people nearby, immediate assistance could not be arranged. Within moments, Prem Kumar disappeared into the deep water.
After receiving information about the incident, teams from Chandil and Chowka police stations reached the spot and began an investigation. Family members of the missing youth also rushed to the scene after being informed. The incident has cast a pall of gloom in the locality and among relatives of the victim.
