Jamshedpur: Youth attacked by elephant in Baharagora, serious

Ghatsila, April 28: A wild elephant attacked a 32 year-old youth in Chakulia under Barsole police station area on Thursday.

The victim, identified as Pitambar Dehuri, a resident of Murakati village under Gudabandha block, was seriously injured in the incident. Hew as admitted to Baharagora Community Health Centre (CHC) and later sent to Odisha for better treatment, sources said.

Sources said Pitambar was carrying Kendu leaves on a motorcycle through Ladhanbani village of Sandra panchayat in the morning. Just then, an elephant suddenly appeared from the woods and lifted Pitambar in its trunk. The elephant threw the youth down on the ground in rage, causing him serious injuries. It also dragged him into the forest and tried to trample him. But somehow Pitambar escaped in the attack.

Local villagers called ambulance on the toll free number 108 and sent him to Baharagora CHC. Forest officials also reached there on getting information about the incident. An ex gratia amount of Rs 5000 was given to the victim for treatment.
