Jamshedpur Women’s University students explore tourism in Jharkhand

Jamshedpur, April 7: The Department of Geography at Jamshedpur Women’s University (JWU) conducted a three-day educational tour from April 3 to April 5, 2025, as part of the practical component of the undergraduate Semester-6 course on Tourism Geography. The field study aimed to provide students with real-world exposure to natural, cultural, and economic sites beyond classroom learning.

Led by faculty members Preeti and Aarti Sharma, the students visited prominent tourist destinations in the western region of Jharkhand, including Netarhat and Patratu. The objective was to help students understand the diverse aspects of tourism geography through direct observation and interaction with the environment.

The group explored various key sites, including the Lodh Waterfall—Jharkhand’s highest waterfall—known for its striking rocky formation and powerful flow. Sugga Falls offered the students insights into natural ecology through its calm and scenic landscape, while Magnolia Sunset Point and Koyal Sunrise Point served as ideal spots for studying visual geography.

Students also visited a pear orchard, where they studied regional agricultural practices and the area’s adaptability to its climatic conditions. Other highlights included Upper Ghaghri Falls, Patratu Valley, and Patratu Lake, which helped the students understand concepts related to water management and the tourism potential of such natural sites.

The dense pine and sal forests in the area gave students a closer look at forest ecosystems. Additionally, they observed traditional livelihoods in rural communities, such as the collection of Mahua flowers from forest areas—an example of primary economic activity that enriches their understanding of human geography.

The tour was organized under the guidance and encouragement of JWU Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Anjila Gupta. Applauding the initiative, Dr. Gupta stated that such field visits not only help students grasp the depth of geography as a subject but also enhance their research and regional analysis capabilities.

The tour proved to be a vital educational experience, integrating concepts of natural, human, and economic geography, while also developing the students’ practical and observational skills.
