Jamshedpur: Women demonstrate at DC office, demand equal rights

Jamshedpur, March 13: Several women’s organizations demonstrated in front of the East Singhbhum Deputy Commissioner’s office On Monday, demanding equal rights for women and prevention of violence against the. A delegation of the women protesters, handed over a 20 point memorandum of demands addressed to the President of India at the DC’s office to be forwarded to the First Citizen. The 20 point charter demanded equal rights and justice for every female citizen of the country.

The demands specifically implied  the implementation of the POSH Act (Prevention of Sexual Harassment at Workplace) and Justice Verma Committee’s recommendations, ensuring strict implementation of the provisions of the Internal Complaints Committee and enhancement of allocation to the Nirbhaya Fund.

The protesters included members of People’s Women’s Committee (ADWA), Working Women’s Coordination Committee (CITU) and women’s cells of various trade unions.

The protesting women raised slogans in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office demanding protection, equal rights and safety from physical abuse. They expressed deep concern over the unchecked trends of exploitation, violence and discrimination against women in every segment of activity. One of the protesters observed, “The catchy government slogan, ‘Beti Bachao – Beti Padhao’ has remained confined to paper and advertisements only.” Sharmila Thakur, Jaya Mazumdar, Panmoni Kisku, Usha Singh, I Pushpa Lata, Mithu Bhattacharya, Taposhi Devi, Moni Kumari, Manju Sharma and several other women participated in the protest.
