Jamshedpur, June 21: The Jharkhand government has implemented Swasthya Suraksha Saptah to break the COVID infection chain. But the week has extended into more than a month and the latest extension is for the period June 17 to June 24. The state, during the leeway period has experienced two weekend lockdowns comprising 4 pm Saturday to 6 am Monday. It must be said that in Jamshedpur, citizens did show their rational side and stayed indoors except for venturing out for medicines or milk or vehicle fuel.
On Monday, June 21, the placid city streets of two days suddenly were converted into seas of men and vehicles vying for space to inch towards their destinations. The market places at Sakchi, Mango, Bistupur, Golmuri, Kadma, Sonari and other places were chock-a-bloc with customers in a frenzied rush to buy groceries, vegetables, fruits, fish, chicken and mutton.
Apart from the earmarked places, vegetable and fruit vendors had set up shop at roadsides. Physical distancing norms were sadly missing and there were no district or police personnel to maintain sanity among the crowds. The markets definitely did brisk business.
Coming to policing, the personnel in khaki have been relentlessly trying to prevent the COVID cycle. Had it not been for their efforts, the viral graph would not have been so reassuring as it is now.
They too know that after being confined to their homes, people do need to go out to procure sustenance of life. But the rush at all city points seemed to have gone berserk and that did not auger well for the well-meaning administrative relaxation.
The police come into their own usually after 4 pm and put on the brakes to madness. Reprimands, warnings and fines are some of the measures adopted to thwart people form going careless on health and civic fronts. However, be it uinder the unrelenting sun or during torrential rains, the police personnel man the several city checkposts to intercept people without helmets or masks or for other wayward ways of jumping COVID protocols. Whatever be the reasons and causes, Monday’s mad rush is best avoided by citizens themselves as their bit of cooperation to the administrative efforts of keeping people safe.
