In a grim reminder of the collapsing security and sanitation standards in Jharkhand’s public healthcare system, panic and outrage erupted at the Medinirai Medical College Hospital in Palamu on Tuesday morning after a stray dog was spotted roaming the premises carrying the body of a newborn infant in its jaws. The horrific sight was discovered around ten in the morning when a visitor alerted the hospital administration and the local police post.
The incident prompted immediate intervention from Palamu Deputy Commissioner Dilip Pratap Singh Shekhawat and Superintendent of Police Kapil Chaudhary, who rushed to the campus to review security lapses.
A Special Investigation Team has been formed to analyze CCTV footage and determine whether the newborn was taken from inside the hospital wards or brought onto the vulnerable campus from outside. Hospital officials have denied any matching infant deaths in their delivery units, attempting to distance the facility from direct responsibility.
However, this incident marks a recurring pattern across the state, where major government medical facilities have repeatedly failed to keep feral animals out of patient areas.
At Ranchi’s apex healthcare center, the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, packs of stray dogs frequently roam corridors, scavenge medical waste, and disrupt patient care.
A similar horror occurred at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Hospital in Jamshedpur, where a stray dog was caught feeding on an unclaimed corpse near the busy ambulance bay, with officials taking hours to clear the scene.
Despite public outcry following every such lapse, official responses remain limited to temporary inquiries and standard promises of action. Whether through unmonitored premises or abandoned maintenance, public hospitals across Jharkhand continue to operate with severe security blind spots, leaving citizens and patient care zones exposed to unacceptable risks.
