Jamshedpur traffic police to use body-worn cameras

Mail News Service

Jamshedpur:  The Jamshedpur traffic police are preparing to introduce a significant change in their operations aimed at improving enforcement and reducing disputes with the public. Starting in December, police officers on duty will be equipped with body-worn cameras, which will be installed at every traffic checkpost. A total of 40 cameras will be distributed to the city’s traffic police. These cameras will record interactions between the police and citizens, providing transparency and reducing frequent arguments over traffic violations.

In addition to the cameras, changes will also be made in the system for issuing fines. Online challans will become more prevalent, streamlining the fine collection process. The body-worn cameras will help ensure that both police actions and traffic violations are documented, which will be reviewed weekly by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP). This initiative is expected to provide a clearer picture of incidents, especially in cases where allegations of misconduct or disputes arise between the police and the public.

Kishore Kaushal, SSP, mentioned that the action plan for these changes is designed to ease the experience for citizens and avoid unnecessary conflicts. The new system will help verify claims in real-time, addressing complaints about police behavior, and providing reliable documentation for both the police and the public.
