Ranchi: The prestigious Durand Cup Football Tournament is set to take place in Jamshedpur this July. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has been formally invited to attend the event. 134th edition of Durand Cup holds particular significance for the football enthusiasts of Jamshedpur, as it will be the second time the historic tournament will be hosted in the Steel City.
The 2025 edition of the prestigious Durand Cup, one of Asia’s oldest football tournaments, is all set to begin on July 18 and will run through to August 23, 2025.
On Friday, Major General Arun Rajesh Moghe (Distinguished Service Medal recipient) and Major General Paramvir Singh Dagar (also a DSM recipient), GOC of the 23 Infantry Division and Vice Chairman of the Durand Cup Football Competition Committee, paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Minister at his residential office in Ranchi on . During the meeting, they informed him of the plans to host the tournament in Jamshedpur.
This edition of the Durand Cup will feature not only national and international teams but will also include participation from local players, giving a boost to regional talent. Football enthusiasts and military personnel from across the country are expected to attend, making it a grand celebration of the sport.
The Durand Cup, officially known as the Durand Football Tournament, is the oldest existing club football tournament in Asia and the fifth-oldest national football competition in the world. It was first held in Shimla in 1888, originally as a competition among the departments and regiments of the Indian armed forces and princely states.
The tournament is named after its founder, Sir Henry Mortimer Durand, who served as the Foreign Secretary of India from 1884 to 1894. It is organized by the Durand Football Society in association with the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
Jamshedpur, known for its sporting spirit, is gearing up to host this historic tournament and welcome football fans from all corners of the country.
