Jamshedpur students wear helmets to class in dilapidated Workers College building

Jamshedpur, Mar 7: In a symbolic protest against the hazardous conditions of their college building, students at Jamshedpur Workers College attended classes wearing helmets on Thursday. The students, troubled by the deteriorating state of the college infrastructure, resorted to this unique form of demonstration to draw attention to the pressing issue.

Last Wednesday, the students had locked down the college premises and caused disruptions for approximately three hours. Following this, they declared their intention to wear helmets during class as the next phase of their protest. The dilapidated condition of the college building has become a cause for concern, with instances of ceiling plaster falling and balcony structures collapsing reported regularly in various classrooms.

Rajesh Mahato from AJSU Student Union highlighted the ongoing safety hazards faced by students. He expressed disappointment that despite incidents being reported regularly in the media, HRD and Kolhan University officials have not taken adequate measures to address the problem. The students feel unsafe within the college premises, and their appeals to local leaders, MLAs, and ministers have gone unanswered.

During the visit of the Health Minister to Workers College, the AJSU Student Union had requested the allocation of the Water Resources Department’s land for constructing a new college campus. However, the request was met with the approval of a 100-room hospital at the same location, which the students deem unsuitable.

Frustrated by the indifferent attitude of the government towards higher education, the AJSU Student Union plans to meet the local MLA cum Minister soon to make him aware of the situation. If the matter remains unresolved, the union is prepared to escalate the issue by approaching the Governor for intervention.
