Jamshedpur short film, ‘Kannaki’ with local caste on Play OTT platform

Jamshedpur, Feb 27: Sakchi Dance Studio Director, Pooja Agarwal has produced her ambitious short film, ‘Kannaki,’ inspired by the Tamil epic written in the first century AD by a Jain Prince, Elango Adigal of the Sangam period. The entire cast in the film comprises local artistes and shot extensively in and around Jamshedpur. Pooja Agarwal’s vehicle was shot in 2021 but the release was delayed because of the then prevailing COVID-19 scare. The lead pair comprises highly talented Sanjoy Dutta and Sneha George and the narrative has powerful performances by character actors Asish Kumar, Nikhil Dubey, Ravindra Kaur, Rajesh Das, Akash Poddar, Prince Rashid, Nikita Gorai, Avinash Sharma ‘Golu, ’Smriti Priya, Chandu and Anil Yadav.

The short film has been written and directed by Kitadih West resident, Deepak Dev who has honed his directorial ambitions in Mumbai since 2012. In a press communiqué issued by Pooja Agarwal on Sunday, she highlighted that the theme is based on the epic poem that is counted among the top five epical Tamil literary compositions.  She mentioned, “At a private screening of the film resulted in OTT platform, Hungama Play selecting our project as a result of which the cast and crew are getting international audience and exposure. The film being screened on a hugely popular OTT platform, Hungama Play is richly motivational.”

The technical team too has put its best foot forward. According to Pooja’s communiqué, “Mumbai cinematographer Md Rashid Iqbal has given a fillip to the mood and nuances of the storyline. The film has been edited by the duo of Prakash and Pragya of VPRA Entertainment while the music has been composed by Dwipanjan Roy on lyrics penned by Preeti Suman. The songs have been rendered by Avinash Mukhi.”

The songs would shortly be released on Savaan, Hungama Music among 10 other platforms.

 Pooja Agarwal stated that writer and director Deepak Dev had earlier made a name for himself with short films like the critically acclaimed ‘Dhoomketu,’ ‘Gandhari,’ and ‘Saala Terrorist.’ His Hungama Original Web Series, ‘Shubh Mangal’ as co-director was screened on Dangal Hungama Play which was well received by the audience.
