Jamshedpur, June 28: Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) conducted a demolition drive against shops built in the basements of two buildings in the Sakchi SNP area, leading to protests from local shopkeepers. The demolition took place at Holding No. 26, Shoppers Square Shopping Mall owned by Samar Bhaduri and Shahid Shakeel, and Holding No. 88, owned by Ashok Modi, Rajesh Modi, and the legal heirs of Deepika Modi.
Local shopkeepers at Shoppers Square Shopping Mall protested against the involvement of Jusco officials, causing a brief ruckus. The situation was calmed by the intervention of Sakchi police and JNAC officials. The shopkeepers vacated their premises in compliance with a High Court order.
In anticipation of possible protests, Dhalbhum SDO Parul Singh deployed JNAC special officer Arvind Tirkey, Mukesh Kumar, city manager Prakash Sahu, Joy Gudiya, and engineers MK Pradhan and Sanjay Kumar as magistrates. During the operation, ten shops in the basement of Holding No. 26 and five shops in the basement of Holding No. 88 were demolished.
The approved map for Shoppers Square Shopping Mall designates the basement as a parking area, but shops had been operating there instead. A proper ramp for vehicle access to the basement parking is required, necessitating the demolition of a shop on the first floor. The campaign remains incomplete, with basement walls yet to be demolished and the construction of a parking ramp still pending. JNAC has issued six notices to the building owner regarding these violations.
Similar conditions were observed at Holding No. 88, where shops near Sheetla Mandir must be demolished to create the required basement parking space.
