Jamshedpur Schools change timing as mercury continue to rise 

Jamshedpur, April 15: As the mercury rises to record-breaking temperatures, schools across in the city are taking action to protect their students from the scorching heat. With climate change leading to more extreme weather events, schools are adapting their schedules to mitigate the risks of heat-related illnesses and ensure the safety and well-being of their students.

In response to the soaring temperatures, schools in the city have made changes to their timing, including adjusting start and end times, altering recess and outdoor activities, and implementing heat-related safety measures.

A notification from Father Vinod Fernandes, principal, Loyola School said that Loyola School will run its classes from 6:30 am to 11: 30 am from April 17.

The school timings for Carmel Junior College students will be 6.25 am to 10.30 am for LKG and HKG. For students of Std 1 to 12 the timing will be 6.25 am to 11.45 am.

Sacred Heart Convent School timings will be 6.20 am to 11.45 am. For students of L kg the timing will be 7.30 am to 10.30 am with effect from Monday April 17.

RMS Khuntadih: From 18th April for pre primary from 7.30 am to 11.00 am while for  class 1 to 12 from 6.45 am to 11.40 am.

Chinmaya Vidyalaya, South Park: from 18 April – 6.30 am to 11.35 am.

Tarapore School: April 18 from 6.25 am to 11.45 am.

Loyola School, Telco: April 17 from 6.30 am to 11.40 am.

DBMS, Kadma : From April 18- for Nursery 7.00 am to 8.45am, LKG- 6.30 am to 9.30am, UKG -6.30 am to 10.00 am, Class 1 to 12- 6.30 am to 11.30 am.

KPS, Kadma: from 18 April 6.40 am to 11.45 am.

Sheyn International- From 17th April for primary from 6.50 am to 10.30 am while for class 1 to 12- 6.50 am to 11.50 am

Baldwin, Kadma: April 18 from 6.30 am to 11.30 am.

Narbheram Hansraj English School: April 18 from 8am  to 10.30 am for Nursery, for class 2 to 12 from 6.30am to 11.45 am.

Dayanand Public School : 6.40 am to 11.45 am from April 18 for LKG to 12th.

JPS : Class 1 to 12- 6.45 am to 11.30 am.

Central Public School : April 18 from 7 am to 11.30 am.

Shiksha Niketan: From April 18, nursery and LKG classes from 7.30 am to 10.30 am, while UKG to 12th from 6.30 am to 11.40 am

Jusco School, Kadma: 6.40 am to 11.30 am for class 1 to 12 from April 18.

JH Tarapore: 7.30 am to 10.30 am for LKG and HKG from 18th April while class 1 to 12 from 6.30 am to 11.45 am.

St Mary’s: From 18th April from 6.30 am to 11.30 am.

MNPS: From 18th April from 6.35 am to 11.25 am for Primary while from 6.35 am to 11.40 am for High School.

Vidya Bharti Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Telco: From 18th April from 6.30 am to 11.30 am.

Jusco School, South Park: 6.45 a.m. to 11.45 a.m.

Schools are moving to early morning start times to avoid the hottest part of the day. Some schools have also extended their summer breaks or implemented modified schedules to reduce exposure to extreme heat. Students, teachers, and staff are being urged to stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned areas.

Heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, can have serious consequences, and schools are taking proactive steps to minimize the risks.

Parents and students have expressed relief and appreciation for the changes made by schools to protect their health during extreme heatwaves. Many parents are also taking additional measures at home, such as providing extra water bottles and encouraging their children to dress in light, breathable clothing.

However, some concerns have been raised about the impact of changes to school schedules on academic routines and extracurricular activities. Adjustments to start times, for example, may disrupt transportation arrangements and affect students’ ability to participate in sports or after-school programs.

As the effects of climate change continue to impact communities, schools are recognizing the need to adapt to changing weather patterns. The safety and well-being of students are paramount, and schools are taking proactive steps to ensure that students can learn in a safe and healthy environment, even in the face of extreme heatwaves.
