Jamshedpur roads deserted as 38-hour complete lockdown commences

Only medicine shops, hospitals, fuel refill outlets allowed to operate

Jamshedpur, June 12: A 38-hours complete lockdown across Jharkhand began from 4 pm on Saturday and would continue till Monday 6 am during which only health centres and medicine shops will be allowed to operate.

Shops and other establishments in Jamshedpur downed shutters at 4 pm and roads were deserted in the evening. Police intensified checking at almost all major thoroughfares in Sakchi, Bistupur, Sitaramdera, Golmuri-Telco Road, Burmamines Station Road, Parsudih-Station Road and Kadma-Sonari Road.

“The idea is to break the chain of infection. It is usually seen that during Sundays people are on a holiday mood and there is crowding in the vegetable and other shops which are usually permitted during the partial lockdown,” said a source in the state disaster management department.

This is part of the directive issued by the state government on June 9 during extension of lockdown till June 17 as part of health safety week. The first lockdown was imposed in Jharkhand on April 22.

“Only those persons going for vaccination, purchasing medicines and for health check up would be allowed to move during the complete lockdown. We have managed to bring down the positivity rate and with this complete lockdown we hope to break the chain of infection of Covid,’ said Jharkhand health minister who also holds portfolio of disaster management department, Banna Gupta.

All shops including fair price shops, grocery and vegetable shops would be closed during the period. Only fuel refill stations and LPG services can function during the period.

The state witnessed only one Covid death on Friday taking the cumulative death toll to 5082. The state added 291 new Covid cases taking the active caseload to 4220 taking the recovery rate to 97.29 and positivity rate to 0.74 per cent.

However, Home delivery of food from restaurants along with take away has been allowed.

During the extended lockdown shopping malls, cinema halls, clubs, bars, banquet halls, multiplexes and department stores  are closed. Stadiums, gymnasiums, swimming pools and parks are also closed. Religious places though open will be prohibited for devotees. There will be prohibition on procession of any kind along with ban on plying of buses.

However, companies and factories will remain to function as normal
ADM law and order N. K Lal informed that during the complete lockdown factories and companies will be allowed to operate.
“The order clearly tells about closure of shops and factories and companies will be allowed to operate. People can show their work gate passes for movement,” said N. K Lal.
