: Panic gripped the city as 968 positive Covid cases were reported on Friday. The positive cases have now reached the mark of 40802. So far 794 deaths have been reported. Today 26 deaths were reported. The active cases are now 6683. It is really very surprising that after the decline for a few months the cases are again rising with every passing day.  The first positive case of Covid-19 was also reported from West Singhbhum at Chaibasa. The youth is 22 year old and returned from Chennai on May 14.

The health department has also intensified testing. Random tests are being conducted at market places in Sakchi and Bistupur. Another official said the administration had previously directed random tests for some sections of society on priority. Now the plan is to target those who are regular in touch with the crowd. The drive is being carried through Baharagora, Chakulia, Dhalbhumgarh, Dumaria, Ghatshila, Jugsalai, Musaboni, Patmada, Potka and urban areas.

“The positivity rate has started showing upwards. About 900 positive cases are being reported every day. People were motivated to undergo tests so that the spread can be controlled. During the tests drive, we have seen that people are scared to undergo tests. They need to understand the more we conduct tests the fear of spread will get normal,” said the health official.

He noted is taking every step to control the situation. The people should continue to follow the lockdown norms and must not come in crowds. Though the Covid-19 cases are under control as compared to metro but still we are taking precautionary measures to ensure that the situation remains normal. “Compliance of social distancing in crowded areas is absolutely necessary to prevent the spread of corona infection. We will conduct surprise inspection of the wedding ceremonies and those flouting norms will be taken into task,” said an official.
