Jamshedpur reports 30 road accidents in February, 22 dead, 14 seriously injured

533 licenses suspended in Jamshedpur, Rs 31.5 lakhs fine collected

Jamshedpur: In a strong move towards improving road safety and enforcing traffic discipline, the transport department of East Singhbhum district suspended the driving licenses of 533 drivers in March for violating traffic rules. Simultaneously, authorities collected a hefty fine of ₹31,51,000 during a month-long vehicle-checking campaign targeting helmetless riders, seatbelt violators, and other defaulters.

This decisive action was part of a broader strategy reviewed during a Traffic and Road Safety Committee meeting held at the Collectorate Auditorium, Jamshedpur, under the directions of District Magistrate-cum-Deputy Commissioner Ananya Mittal. The meeting was attended by ADC Bhagirath Prasad, Dhalbhum SDO Shatabdi Majumdar, DTO Dhananjay, Executive Engineer Deepak Sahay, and other senior officials of concerned departments.

During the review of recent road accident statistics, it was revealed that 30 road accidents occurred in February alone, resulting in 22 fatalities and 14 serious injuries. The alarming data prompted officials to stress stricter enforcement of traffic norms and immediate infrastructural interventions at accident-prone black spots and curves.

Key decisions taken in the meeting included: Strict penalties for helmetless two-wheeler riders, seatbelt defaulters, and speeding vehicles, Action against roadside encroachments and illegal parking, Installation of warning signage at high-risk zones, Intensified public awareness campaigns on road safety Highlighting a positive development, the district also witnessed a surge in responsible driving with the issuance of 2055 new driving licenses, including 1762 for men and 293 for women, indicating rising awareness and compliance.

Officials reiterated the importance of public cooperation in making roads safer. “Each life matters. Ensuring the safety of every commuter is not just the government’s responsibility, but a shared one. Violations will not be tolerated,” said an officer present at the meeting.

With the administration tightening the grip on traffic rule enforcement and simultaneously focusing on education and infrastructure, the district is gearing up to make its roads safer, more disciplined, and life-saving.
