Jamshedpur records 40 mm rainfall, deficit down to 26 per cent

Jamshedpur: Heavy showers owing to the impact of the cyclonic circulation drenched in the past 24 hours have brought down the deficit percentage to 29 from 26. The margin is likely to narrow further, with the Met department predicting widespread rain in the next 24 hours.

This is the first time this monsoon the state experienced widespread rainfall, especially in southern, north eastern and central parts of the state. Statistics show that Chakradharpur in West Singhbhum and Rajmahal in Godda district registered 60 mm of rain topping the charts in past 24 hours.  Chandil in adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district, and steel city Jamshedpur  recorded around  40 mm of rain each.

Met officials said the monsoon flow was activated in Jharkhand after the formation of the low-pressure area over Gangetic Bengal and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal which later converted into a depression resulting in widespread and heavy rain.

Meteorologist at IMD’s Ranchi Met Centre S C Mandal said the Depression over northwest Jharkhand and neighbourhood moved slightly west northwestwards and has weakened into a well marked low pressure area today. ” An associated cyclonic circulation wa also  extending upto 7.6 Km above mean sea level tilting southwards,” he said.

According to Meteorological office in Sonari, the low pressure in the Bay of Bengal is bringing good rainfall in the region and the situation is likely to remain the same in next 24 hours. Traffic was disrupted as major main roads in the city were inundated. Commuters had a tough time wading through knee-deep water, at some places, to reach their destinations. There is also a fear of an outbreak of water-borne diseases. According to information areas like Mango, Jugsalai, Baghbera, Pardih have been worst hit. Water clogging at these areas has made difficult for people to move.
