Jamshedpur, July 16: The readiness of the city’s police officers to handle crowds was put to test during a mock drill on Tuesday at the Golmuri Police Lines. This exercise was conducted in preparation for Moharram. SSP Kishore Kaushal and rural SP cum acting city SP Rishabh Garg were present on the occasion. Police officers found it challenging to launch tear gas shells effectively. The mock drill focused on crowd control techniques such as appropriate use of batons, tear gas and water cannons. The exercise also covered specific attention points for police personnel during the march past.
Police personnel, under the supervision of senior police officials, rehearsed controlling aggressive crowds. On one hand officers acted as rioters and on the other hand police personnel worked on controlling them. The drill revealed several areas for improvement, which were noted by SSP Kishore Kaushal and Rural SP cum Acting city SP Rishabh Garg. The officials provided guidance to the police personnel and checked the equipment used during the exercise. The drill included the participation of the district police force, JAP 6 and QRT team.
The mock drill included training on how police should handle situation when violence erupted or the crowd turned uncontrollable. It also included instructions on how to control public movement, interact with the public, barricade areas and the proper use of tear gas and batons. To disperse the crowd, they were shown how to use water cannons. SSP Kishore explained that the mock drill was conducted in anticipation of the upcoming festival. The police force was trained to effectively control the crowd if any untoward incident occurred or if the public did not comply with the administrative orders during the festival.
