Jamshedpur, Oct 29: Police have cracked the case involving Rs 2 crore extortion demand from liquor businessman Hare Ram Singh in Jamshedpur’s Sitaramdera area.
The mastermind behind the crime, Akash Singh alias Lalu, along with shooter Mahanand alias Gopla, has been arrested.
Mahanand, a shooter associated with notorious criminals Prince Khan and Sujit Sinha, was injured during a police encounter in Baridih and is currently undergoing treatment at MGM Hospital.
According to City SP Kumar Shivashish, the case began when Hare Ram Singh’s son, Harish Singh, had earlier promised gangster Dashrath Shukla and his associate Akash Singh a partnership in their liquor business if they were allotted new liquor shop licenses in Jamshedpur.
However, after obtaining the license, Harish Singh instead partnered with Prem Narayan Shivhare, a businessman from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh.
Feeling betrayed, Dashrath Shukla and Akash Singh sought the help of Sujit Sinha and Prince Khan gangs to threaten the family.
On October 10, when the demand of Rs 2 crore extortion was not paid, the gangsters fired gunshots outside Hare Ram Singh’s residence to create panic.
The Sitaramdera police registered an FIR and launched an intensive investigation.
During the probe, police received intelligence about the accused hiding in an abandoned quarter in Baridih’s Ketu area.
When the police team reached the spot, Ravi Mahanand opened fire on them, prompting retaliatory action.
Mahanand was injured in the leg and was immediately taken into custody and hospitalized.
Following his interrogation, police nabbed Akash Singh alias Lalu, a close aide of Dashrath Shukla.
SP Kumar Shivashish stated that after medical examination at MGM Hospital, Akash Singh was sent to jail.
He further assured that the police will continue their crackdown on the Prince Khan and Sujit Sinha criminal networks and warned that any attempt to extort local businessmen will be dealt with strictly.
So far, police have ruled out any additional extortion cases against other businessmen.
