Jamshedpur on way to become plastic free by 2023

Jamshedpur, Feb 9: Jamshedpur seems all set to become a plastic free city by the next year, courtesy Tata Steel which has joined hands with Tata Steel Utilities and Infrastructure Services Limited to make this possible.

The ambitious project of Tata Steel promises to radically change the solid waste management of the city. This information was given to Tata Steel MD and CEO TV Narendran by Rituraj Sinha, Chief, Corporate Administration, Tata Steel, during a meeting of Joint Consultation Council Management (JCCM) organized on Wednesday under the aegis of Tata Steel.

Sinha said work was on to make the city plastic free by 2023. He said work was also underway on solid waste management. He said efforts were on to convert solid waste into compost. Tata Steel has already tied up with a Kolkata-based company for electronic waste disposal, he said, adding that the results were encouraging and that electronic waste management was going to be a major challenge in future.

Meanwhile, Tata Steel MD said it was not possible to expand the steel plant in Jamshedpur any further and hence the company was looking for possibilities to increase production in other plants. He said the company did not want to put production pressure on the city to save its ecology.
