Jamshedpur on alert as Kharkai river flows above danger mark, warning issued

Subarnarekha water level continuous to rise

Jamshedpur: The local administration has raised an alert in response to the escalating water levels of the Kharkai and Subarnarekha rivers, driven by persistent heavy rainfall in the region. Kharkai River is flowing above danger mark while Subarnarekha River is nearing the danger mark.

With the potential for further increases in water levels, authorities are urging residents to exercise caution and remain vigilant, particularly those residing in the coastal and submergence areas along these rivers.

Current River Levels: Subarnarekha River: Danger Level (metre): 121.50 Present Level (metre): 119.20 (at Mango Bridge Site) and Kharkai River: Danger Level (metre): 129.00 Present Level (metre): 129.46 (at Adityapur Bridge Site)

The continuous downpour has led to a rapid rise in water levels, prompting concerns about possible flooding and associated risks. The administration is taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of the community and minimize potential damages.

The official communique said: “ Residents living in the proximity of these rivers are strongly advised to adhere to the following precautions: Stay alert and informed about the changing weather and river conditions. Regularly monitor local news updates, weather forecasts, and official announcements from the district administration. Refrain from approaching the banks of the rivers, as the swift currents and rising water levels pose a direct threat to personal safety. Avoid engaging in any activities near the river that may put lives at risk. Comply with the guidelines issued by the district administration without fail. These directives are designed to ensure the safety and well-being of the community during this challenging period”.

Keep emergency contact numbers handy and share them with family members and neighbors. In case of any emergency or need for assistance, promptly reach out to the appropriate authorities.

The administration’s primary concern is to prevent any loss of life and property due to the rising water levels. By exercising caution, remaining informed, and adhering to safety protocols, residents can collectively contribute to maintaining a secure environment during this critical time.

The administration has asked special officers of local urban bodies — Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee, Mango Notified Area Committee and Jugsalai Municipality — and the circle officer of Jamshedpur to coordinate among themselves on a 24-hour basis for emergency evacuations and flash flood management in identified vulnerable areas.

Water also entered low lying areas like the Basti area of Bagbera as local administration sounded alert to other households in the Basti and Baroda Ghat areas of Bagbera to be prepared for evacuation any moment.

According to information, areas like Mango, Jugsalai, Baghbera, Parsudih have been hit. Water clogging in these areas has made it difficult for people to move.

Chandil dam gates opened

Chandil, August 18: Due to day-long rains in Chandil and surrounding areas on Thursday, the water level of the dam is increasing rapidly. The water level of the dam stood at 181.70 meters on Friday morning. After which both the open radial gates of the dam were increased by one meter each. Due to increasing instead of decreasing water level, the third radial gate of the dam was also opened up to one meter at around 10:30. Earlier, on August 13, one gate was opened up to 30 cm and on August 17, the second gate was opened up to 20 cm. Due to the rains, the water level of the dam had started rising from Thursday evening itself.

Dam’s water enter Ichagarh

Chandil, August 18: Water has entered Ichagarh village after the water level of Chandil Dam increased. At present, the roads of the village are submerged and if the water of the dam increases, water will also enter the houses of the people.

After opening three radial gates, the water level of the dam is stable. After which the displaced are breathing a sigh of relief.

Like every year, this year also the rain has once again increased the concern of the displaced. Actually, whenever there are heavy rains, the water level of Chandil Dam starts increasing. When water enters the houses of the displaced people, people are forced to take shelter in other places.

After the heavy rains, the water level of Chandil Dam is continuously increasing. The displaced are afraid that the water level of the dam may suddenly increase and their village may be submerged once again.
