Jamshedpur, Feb 2: Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Hospital (MGMCH) is soon going to get a facelift. The state health ministry has begun preparations in this regard. The Department of Health, Family Welfare and Medical Education has taken initiative for repairing and renovation of the hospital buildings.
Important departments such as the emergency, intensive care unit (ICU), burn care unit, main administrative block and AIDS testing centre all are housed in the old buildings. As per the plans, almost all the buildings infrastructure that exists on medical college hospital premises would be pulled down and in place of them, multi-storied buildings will be constructed.
The MGMCH is a government hospital with a facility of 540 beds. Everyday around 1000 patients come here for treatment. Over the years parts of ceiling and windows have collapsed four times in the government hospital. Due to lack of repair work and attention of the authorities concerned, the condition of the hospital has deteriorated to a great extent.
Arun Kumar, superintendent, MGM medical college hospital confirmed about the renovation of the hospital in a big way. ” As per our plans multi-storied buildings will be set up in place of building infrastructures standing today, ” Kumar.
Under the renovation plan, the number of beds will be increased to 750 beds with state-of-the-art medical facilities. Kumar informed that a private agency, Kothari Construction Private Ltd, has begun the soil testing on the hospital premises.
“The hospital building is in poor condition, which needs immediate repair. Moreover the facilities at operation theatre and C T Scan need to be upgraded. The facilities for doctors and attendants also need to be addressed,” said a senior official. “We are pinning hopes on the new Government and are hopeful that the Government will pay heed to the problems faced by the hospital,” he further noted.
State Government governed Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital, is an Indian medical school established in 1964. It is situated in the outskirts of Jamshedpur near Dimna. The students are admitted through an All India pre medical test CBSE PMT held by CBSE and Jharkhand and Bihar states’ combined entrance tests. The college’s hospital is located in Sakchi. Currently there is post graduate education in non-clinical and paraclinical subjects.
