Jamshedpur, Aug 26: A massive drive has been undertaken across the city to prevent flooding of roads and residential areas due to water logging from clogged drains during monsoon. The administration has issued directive to the civic bodies across city including Jamshedpur notified area committee (JNAC), Mango notified area committee (MNAC) and Jugsalai municipality to ensure that all drains coming in their respective area are cleaned.
“I had already asked the local urban bodies to start the cleaning of drains in their areas and a formal directive has also been issued asking the civic bodies to clean and desilt the drains. I would be conducting inspection of different areas to see if the directive is being followed or not,” said an official.
His seriousness was evident with surprise inspection of several drains in the Mango area which has had instances of residential areas submerged due to flash floods during monsoon after heavy rains almost every year especially in densely populated areas like Kunwar Basti, Hargodam and pockets in Dimna Road. As many as six drains were inspected in the presence of Mango notified area committee special officer.
“Work on cleaning of drains was being done satisfactorily at almost all the locations in Mango. However, there were some issues on encroachment of drains in Mango and a directive has been issued to start an anti-encroachment drive after verification of the spots from Jamshedpur circle office,” he said.
The inspection of drains by deputy commissioner at Mango was done at Kunwar Basti, Chepapul Road near Amarjyoti School, Kalikanagar (near Mayank Mrinal Hospital), near Dimna Residency (in Dimna Roundabout), near Moon City (Dimna Road), near Parasnagar (Dimna Road) while encroachment was found at drain near Moon City and near Dimna Roundabout. Meanwhile, JNAC has also written to Tata Steel to clean the drains carrying its effluents (around 15) and has also started cleaning of drains (around 30) in different localities under its jurisdiction.
Similar cleaning has been undertaken also at Jugsalai. Incidentally, the city has nearly 20 big drains out of which 15 drains have effluents of companies passing through it while there are nearly 50 small drains in different localities of the city.
