Jamshedpur, June 11: A 68-year-old man sustained critical burn injuries after allegedly attempting self-immolation near Dhatkidih Lake in Bistupur on Thursday afternoon, reportedly driven by prolonged family-related distress.
According to eyewitnesses, Sattar Khan, a resident of Dhatkidih A Block, arrived at the lakeside carrying petrol and, before onlookers could intervene, poured the fuel over himself and set himself ablaze. The incident triggered panic in the area as flames rapidly engulfed him.

In a courageous act, Mohammad Islam, a local youth who works at a nearby vehicle-washing facility, rushed to the scene and immediately began efforts to extinguish the fire. With assistance from local residents, he managed to bring the flames under control and rescue the severely injured man.
On receiving information about the incident, Bistupur police reached the spot and shifted Khan to Tata Main Hospital (TMH) for emergency treatment. Doctors said he suffered extensive burn injuries and remains in critical condition.
Residents of the area said Khan had been under significant mental stress for some time due to an ongoing family dispute. His family members later arrived at the hospital following the incident.
Police have recovered burnt clothing and other material evidence from the scene and have launched an investigation into the circumstances leading to the self-immolation attempt.
