Jamshedpur: Karnataka’s Samarth Rao emerges sole leader with 5.5 points in 4th all-India FIDE Rating Chess Tournament

Jamshedpur, June 27: In the 6th round of the of Tata Steel’s 4th all-India FIDE Rating Chess Tournament 2024 on Thursday the first board produced a clear result as the joint leaders Samarth Rao (Karnataka) and Naveen Kumar (Andhra Pradesh) were pitted against each other, Samarth started the game aggressively going with the stonewall attack dominating him in the opening and took a clear edge on his opponent on 13th move somehow Naveen managed to survive till 46th move and eventually he lost his game.

On board 2 Nabhneel Das continues his brilliant form creating an upset and forcing his stronger opponent Venkata Krishna Karthik to agree on the draw in 38 moves.

On board 3 Vaibhav Gautam went for a classical attack with black pieces and made a clinical finish to secure a win in just 37 moves. On board 4 Aditya from Maharashtra playing with white pieces defeated Jagdish of Karnataka.

After the end of the 6th round, former champion Samrth J Rao (Karnataka) emerged as the sole leader with 5.5 points out of 6 while Venkata Krishna Karthik (Andhra Pradesh), Vaibhav Gautam (Delhi), Nabhneel Das ( Uttar Pradesh), Aditya (Maharashtra)  are trailing behind him with 5 points each.

Two more rounds of play are left to decide the final winners of this tournament which will conclude tomorrow (June 27).

Earlier, Parul Singh, Sub-divisional Magistrate Dhalbhum, inaugurated the 6th round of the tournament. She congratulated all the participants for making their way to this prestigious national.

The players were taken on a visit to the Tata Football Academy, Tata Archery Academy and High Performance Centre which serves as a showcase for the rich sports and fitness culture that the Tata Steel Group has cultivated over the years.
