Jamshedpur, September 24: The Jharkhand Telugu Brahman Sangham (JTBS) is organizing traditional Bommala Koluvu competition during the auspicious Navratri festival from September 22. The event is open to members of the Telugu community in Jamshedpur, which has a population of around 1.30 lakh.
Bommala Koluvu is a cherished Telugu tradition of arranging dolls to depict mythological stories, traditionally celebrated in homes with unmarried girls. The nine-day festival begins on the first day of Sharad Navratri and is a way for families to celebrate Dussehra while preserving cultural heritage. Dolls are artistically displayed on wooden steps or planks, representing social gatherings and mythological tales.
This year, the number of participants has doubled compared to last year, with 15 families already confirmed to take part. The competition aims to revive this dying tradition and promote Telugu culture among the younger generation.
Rules and Guidelines:
- Entry is free and open only to residents of Jamshedpur.
- Participants must follow certain parameters including theme-based arrangements, creative decorations, and explaining the significance of Bommala Koluvu.
- More than 15 families have expressed interest in participating.
Judgment and Results:
Judges will visit participants’ homes during the festival days, possibly on Saptami or Ashtami, to evaluate the displays. Winners will be announced during the Andhra Day celebrations on November 1.
Gopal Krishna, Founder of JTBS, said the competition is aimed at reviving the rich Telugu tradition and spreading cultural awareness among the youth. He emphasized that Bommala Koluvu is not only an artistic display but also a meaningful way to connect with the community’s heritage.
This initiative is expected to inspire more families to continue the tradition and keep the cultural spirit alive in Jamshedpur.
