Jamshedpur Jail administration to open petrol pumps operated by former prisoners

Jamshedpur: In a unique initiative aimed at rehabilitation and reform, Ghagidih Jail Administration is set to open its own petrol pumps, where former prisoners will be employed. This innovative plan is being implemented through a partnership with Hindustan Petroleum, with whom the jail administration has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The petrol pumps will be operated by ex-prisoners who have demonstrated good conduct and responsibility during their incarceration. Jail Superintendent Ajay Kumar Prajapati emphasized, “The goal is to rehabilitate and make prisoners self-reliant, enabling them to earn a dignified livelihood after release.”

To bring this plan to fruition, the jail administration is in the process of applying for petrol pump licenses and has sought land details, including plot numbers and maps, from the district administration for Ghagidih Central Jail and Sakchi Jail.

In the first phase, petrol pumps will be set up near these jail premises to ensure easy access to land and customers. Plans to extend the initiative to Ghatsila Sub-Jail are also under consideration.

Rehabilitation efforts already underway
This initiative is part of broader efforts by the Ghagidih Jail Administration to rehabilitate inmates. A bakery run by prisoners is already operational, producing goods available to the public. Additionally, prisoners manufacture handloom clothes and aluminum utensils, with earnings credited to their accounts for use after their release.

The project envisions the opening of 99 petrol pumps in collaboration with Hindustan Petroleum. Training programs will be provided to ex-prisoners to prepare them for the job.
