Jamshedpur, Dec 26: A one day sit-in programme was organized before the office of Mango Municipal Corporation (MMC) by members of Sri Sri Durga Puja Committee, Gandhi Maidan Mango, to protest against the proposed construction of stadium and park at the puja venue. Members of Central Durga Puja Committee, Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Bharatiya Janata Party and local sadhus and seers were also present to lend support to the cause.
Addressing the gathering, chief patron of the puja committee cum BJP trade and commerce cell state convenor Neeraj Singh said Durga Puja is being organized at Gandhi Maidan since 1964. He said certain anti-Hindu elements were trying to stop this tradition by getting park and stadium built at the puja venue. He said the members of Central Durga Puja Committee and Sri Sri Durga Puja Committee were not informed or consulted before taking the decision on the projects.
Singh further said that the funds being used to build the park and stadium were issued under the 15th Finance Commission and were only meant to improve air quality, reduce pollution and carry out solid waste management initiatives.
The protestors handed a memorandum to Suresh Yadav, executive officer of MMC and demanded a stay on the ongoing construction.
