Jamshedpur: Finally the food waste generated from hotels in Jamshedpur seems to be finding a useful way of disposal. Tata Steel UISL and the Jamshedpur Hotel and Restaurant Association (JHRA) have joined hands to set up Jharkhand’s first Bio Gas Waste Management system in a hotel at Pod N Beyond Smart Hotel@Bistupur. The Bio Gas Waste Management system will be inaugurated on March 13, 2024 by Ritu Raj Sinha, managing director, Tata Steel UISL.
With this Hotel Pod n Beyond Smart Hotel India’s 1st POD Hotel along with Hotel Madrasi Bistupur becomes the 1st Hotel in Jharkhand to get Bio Gas Waste Management system. Finally the food waste generated from hotels seems to be finding a useful way of disposal.
The main objective is to process Bio-degradable waste at the point of generation itself, this will be the real game changer in terms of saving billions of dollars by saving on Transportation, emission, Gas productivity in a country of 150 billion people.
The overarching goal of this collaboration is to extend the Bio Gas Waste Management system to all hotels in Jamshedpur. An added benefit of the system is that its byproduct serves as valuable manure for plants, promoting a circular economy.
According to Ranjan, the hotels in Jamshedpur generate substantial amounts of urban waste daily, with organic waste constituting 40% of the total. Unfortunately, most of this waste ends up in landfills, and its perceived value is often deemed zero or even negative. The Bio Gas Waste Management system offers a practical solution to tap into the untapped energy potential of organic waste.
The hospitality sector is recognized as a significant waste generator in the country. The complex challenge of managing food waste from hotels, restaurants, resorts, and other commercial hospitality centers is one that the industry has been grappling with. Ideally, there should be a closed loop between waste creation and recycling, with hotels managing their own waste and reducing the burden on municipal corporations.
The partnership between JHRA and Tata Steel UISL aligns with the Prime Minister’s Swachh Bharat initiative, emphasizing the hospitality industry’s role in converting waste into resources. By pioneering sustainable waste management practices, the industry could contribute significantly to India’s efforts to reduce its $180 billion fossil fuel imports.
