Jamshedpur: A 19-year-old Graduate college student, Sonali Kumari, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in Adityapur on Thursday night due to constant harassment by a man from her neighborhood.

According to her family, Sonali’s marriage was arranged in Nalanda, Bihar, but a neighbor, Sanjit Patel, persistently harassed and blackmailed her. He allegedly called her fiancé to defame her and even threatened her life.

On Thursday night, Sonali had dinner and went to her room. When her mother knocked on her door later, there was no response. Looking through the window, they found her hanging from her dupatta. The family broke the door and rushed her to TMH hospital, but doctors declared her dead on arrival.

A suicide note recovered from her room named Sanjit Patel as the person responsible. “He threatened to ruin my marriage and kill me. I had no choice,” the note read.

Sonali’s father has lodged a police complaint against Sanjit Patel, Pankaj Prasad, Pawan Prasad, Ashok Prasad, Muniya Devi and Anjani Devi, accusing them of continuous harassment and threats. Police have launched an investigation into the matter.
