Jamshedpur: Gang smuggling cows through oil tanker busted, 21 cows rescued

Jamshedpur, Oct 25: Baharagora police here busted an interstate gang of animal traffickers by arresting one of its members and rescuing 21 cows from his clutches.

The accused was identified as Sheikh Meraj, a native of Odisha. According to Sanatan Tiwary, officer-in-charge of Baharagora police station, “We had got a tip-off about a gang smuggling cows from Odisha to West Bengal via Baharagora. We had stepped up vigil but could not get them. Around 2.30 am, a modified oil tanker was seen coming through the route. The tanker driver sped up to evade arresting, but was caught after a chase. During a search, 21 cows were found inside. Two dead cows were also found in the container.”

The rescued cows have been kept at a shelter under the care of a local NGO in Baharagora, said Tiwary.
