Jamshedpur, Oct 25: New UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has a Jamshedpur connection. Although he never visited the city, his mother-in-law and Infosys Vice Chairman Sudha Murty has worked at the Tata Motors plant in Jamshedpur as Development Engineer. She was the first woman engineer to have joined Tata Motors in 1974. She created history despite a brief stay in Jamshedpur.

Sudha Murty, who is a celebrity writer of children’s stories, had once written to JRD Tata and expressed her anguish over the fact that only males were eligible to apply for the post of engineers in Tata Motors. She had said that women should also be given the opportunity to prove their capabilities. She was inducted in the company after a special interview on JRD’s initiative.

Rishi Sunak married Akshata Murty, daughter of Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy, in Bengaluru in 2009. The two met at Stanford University in England during MBA studies. They have two daughters Anoushka and Krishna.
