Jamshedpur, Feb 17: In a bid to combat child marriage and empower girls in Potka block, a unique initiative was undertaken by the social organization Youth Unity for Voluntary Action (YUVA). Girls from Chhota Sigdi village of Heselbil Panchayat participated in football coaching sessions held at Chhota Sigdi Football Ground, organized under the auspices of the Girls Football Foundation (GFF) program.
Led by young leader Seema Bhumij, the girls were trained not only in football skills but also in understanding the importance of sports and breaking down gender-based stereotypes. Through physical exercises and football techniques, the girls were encouraged to challenge patriarchal norms that often restricted their freedom and opportunities.
The program aimed to raise awareness about gender discrimination prevalent in families and society and empower girls to assert their rights. By engaging in sports like football, girls gained confidence, broke free from the shackles of societal constraints, and forged a distinct identity for themselves.
The success of the program was attributed to the efforts of YUVA activists including Jyoti Hembram, Rila Sardar, Kiran Sardar, Ratan Paul, and Chandra Kala Munda.
YUVA coach Seema Bhumij observed, “Football is a powerful tool for social change. It can help to break down gender stereotypes and empower girls to reach their full potential.”
One of the participants in the football coaching camp who was excited, stated,”I am so glad that I had the opportunity to participate in this program. I have learned so much about football and about myself. I am more confident and assertive now, and I am more likely to speak out against gender discrimination.”
