Jamshedpur, Feb 11: In a brazen daylight attack that has shaken the city, fruit trader Kanhaiya Yadav succumbed to his injuries at Tata Main Hospital (TMH) on Wednesday after being shot near Namda Basti under the Golmuri police station area.
According to eye – witnesses, two unidentified assailants arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire at Yadav, reportedly shooting nearly five rounds before fleeing the scene.
The sudden gunfire triggered panic in the locality, with residents rushing for cover. The incident occurred barely 50 metres from the Golmuri police station, intensifying concerns over security.
Yadav was immediately rushed to TMH in critical condition and placed under close medical supervision.
Despite sustained efforts by doctors, he later died during treatment.
Preliminary inputs suggest the attack may be linked to a long-standing rivalry dating back to 2016 over the presidency of the Tinplate Kali Mandir Committee. While Billa had previously held the post, Yadav later assumed charge as president. Investigators suspect that tensions stemming from the leadership dispute may have culminated in the fatal assault.
The names of Billa and Vicky Singh alias Kundi have surfaced during the probe, though police have not officially confirmed anyone’s involvement.
Raids are underway to trace the accused.
Soon after the incident, police cordoned off the area and began collecting evidence. CCTV footage from nearby locations is being scrutinised as part of the investigation. Officials have assured that those responsible will be arrested at the earliest.
The killing, executed in broad daylight and in close proximity to a police station, has raised serious questions about law and order in the city, especially at a time when the Model Code of Conduct is in force for civic body elections.
Over the past year, Jamshedpur has witnessed a worrying rise in criminal incidents, including encounters, kidnappings and daylight shootings. The open circulation of narcotics and the recent busting of an illegal arms manufacturing unit have further deepened public anxiety.
The Golmuri shooting has once again underscored fears that criminals are operating with growing audacity, even in areas considered high-security zones.

Jamshedpur, Feb 11: Golmuri was gripped by shock and anger after fruit trader and BJP supporter Kanhaiya Yadav, a resident of Namda Basti, succumbed to his injuries at Tata Main Hospital (TMH) on Wednesday evening.
Yadav had been shot earlier in the day by unidentified assailants near the Tinplate Sports Complex, barely a few metres from the Golmuri police station.
According to reports, Yadav was sitting near the sports complex after his morning walk when bike-borne criminals opened fire at him, shooting him in the head and chest before fleeing the spot. The brazen daylight attack in close proximity to a police station has triggered widespread panic in the locality and sharp political reactions.
Soon after learning about the incident, BJP Jamshedpur Mahanagar president Sanjeev Sinha, former district president Dinesh Kumar, former district president Gunjan Yadav, Binod Singh and Golmuri Mandal president Pappu Upadhyay rushed to TMH to meet the victim’s family and enquire about his condition from doctors. Former Chief Minister Raghubar Das and Jamshedpur East MLA Purnima Sahu were also informed about the incident.
Expressing deep grief over Yadav’s death, MLA Purnima Sahu termed the murder a “grim reminder of the collapsing law and order situation in the city.”
She spoke to the SSP over the phone, demanding immediate arrest of the culprits and strict action. “When criminals can execute a murder in broad daylight just steps away from a police station, it clearly shows how emboldened they have become. The police administration has completely failed to instill fear among anti-social elements,” she said. Sahu further added that at a time when the city is reportedly on high alert following security inputs, such an incident exposes serious lapses.
BJP Mahanagar president Sanjeev Sinha launched a scathing attack on the district administration and the ruling alliance, alleging that criminals are operating fearlessly under political protection.
He demanded the arrest of the accused within 24 hours, warning that the party would launch an aggressive agitation if swift action is not taken.
Former BJP district president Dinesh Kumar, who reached TMH immediately after receiving news of the shooting, strongly condemned the murder. “The killing of Kanhaiya Yadav in such a daring manner has shaken the conscience of the city. I visited the hospital as soon as I heard about the incident. This is not just a murder, it is a direct challenge to the law enforcement system.
The administration must act decisively and ensure that the perpetrators are arrested at the earliest,” Kumar said.
Former district president and MLA representative Gunjan Yadav described the incident as a glaring example of the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
He alleged that criminals no longer fear the law and warned that the BJP would not remain silent if the case is not cracked promptly.
Golmuri Mandal president Pappu Upadhyay demanded a fair investigation, immediate arrest of the accused, adequate compensation, and security for the bereaved family. He said the party would intensify its protest if the administration fails to deliver justice.
The shocking murder has heightened tensions in the area, with residents demanding swift police action to restore a sense of security.
