Jamshedpur, Aug 17: Animal lovers and activists staged a protest on Sunday in front of Gopal Maidan, Bistupur, opposing the Supreme Court’s recent order directing that all stray dogs be removed from streets and placed in shelter homes. Protesters, carrying banners and accompanied by street dogs, raised slogans against the order, calling it “inhumane and impractical.” According to demonstrators, community dogs are not just guardians but also an emotional part of society. “Displacing them will end a bond of coexistence that has lasted for decades,” one activist said. Protesters argued that relocating dogs is not a solution and instead demanded increased focus on vaccination, sterilization, and care facilities to manage the population and ensure safety. The protest drew participation from animal rights activists, social workers, students, and women, all echoing that dogs should be seen as part of community life, not a nuisance. “If authorities forcefully remove the dogs, we will intensify our peaceful movement,” warned dog lovers. The demonstration follows the Supreme Court’s August 11, 2025 directive in Delhi-NCR, which is likely to be extended to other states, sparking widespread concern among animal welfare groups.
