Jamshedpur, May 4: Following the roof collapse incident at MGM Medical College Hospital on May 3, 2025, a team from the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) visited MGM and Tata Main Hospital (TMH) to assess the situation and offer assistance to the victims and their families. The visit was carried out under the directions of Hon’ble Sujit Narayan Prasad, Executive Chairman of Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority (JHALSA), and the guidance of the Principal District and Sessions Judge, Civil Court, Jamshedpur.

The team, comprising Acting Principal District and Sessions Judge Bimalesh Kumar Sahay, CJM Vishal Gaurav, DLSA Secretary Abhishek Prasad, Judge Siddhant Tigga, court staff, and PLVs (Para Legal Volunteers), reached MGM Hospital at 9:45 a.m. and inspected the site where the roof of the medicine ward’s corridor collapsed from the second floor to the ground floor.
According to hospital authorities, the incident resulted in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to two others. The deceased have been identified as: Lucas Simon Tirkey (61), resident of Gadra, Govindpur, East Singhbhum, David Johnson (70), resident of Straight Mile Road, Sakchi, Jamshedpur and Shrichand Tanti (50), resident of Tanti Club, Seraikela-Kharsawan.
The injured include Sunil Kumar (48), resident of Traffic Colony, Parsudih, currently receiving treatment at MGM Hospital, Renuka Devi (72), mother of deceased Shrichand Tanti, who was visiting her son and sustained critical injuries. She has been referred to TMH for advanced treatment and is admitted to the Critical Care Unit.
During their visit, the DLSA team interacted with Sunil Kumar, who confirmed that he was receiving proper care and was recovering. The team then proceeded to TMH to check on Renuka Devi’s condition, which is currently stable.
Due to difficulty in locating some victims’ relatives, DLSA mobilized its PLVs—Nagendra Kumar and Dilip Jaiswal in Jamshedpur, and Mukesh Kumar Mishra and Faguram Mahato in Seraikela—to trace and inform the families. Efforts were on to assist the families with hospital procedures and to ensure the dignified cremation of the deceased.
PLV Nagendra Kumar, who was present at MGM at the time of the incident, played an active role in helping the injured during the initial rescue operation.
Speaking to the media, Bimalesh Kumar Sahay assured that all possible assistance would be extended to the injured and to the families of the deceased through the judicial process. Meanwhile, MGM Hospital Superintendent Dr. R.K. Mandhan and Vice Superintendent Dr. Nakul Chaudhary informed the DLSA team that the accident occurred due to the collapse of an old corridor roof near the medicine ward, where several long-term patients were present. The tragedy struck just after lunch when patients had stepped out into the corridor.
The DLSA team also noted that the oxygen supply line was damaged in the collapse, necessitating the emergency referral of Renuka Devi to TMH. The team verified her medical status and the overall situation during their visit there.
Authorities continued to monitor the situation closely, with DLSA playing a crucial role in ensuring legal and humanitarian support for all those affected. (w/gsd)
