Jamshedpur deserves to be called football capital of the country: Jharkhand Governor

Durand Cup Trophies Unveiled in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur, July 7: Jharkhand Governor Santosh Gangwar stressed that football’s popularity is deeply rooted in the state. “There is a passion for football in almost every village of Jharkhand. Jamshedpur rightly deserves to be called the football capital of the country. The culture of sports is embedded in the soil here. Be it the JRD Tata Sports Complex or Tata Football Academy, talent and training are clearly visible.”

Addressing the gathering after unveiling the Durand Cup trophies at the XLRI Auditorium on Monday, Governor praised the region’s sports culture, youth energy, and its contribution to the national sporting landscape, calling the event a matter of pride for the entire state.

The three iconic trophies of the Durand Cup, Asia’s oldest and most prestigious football tournament, were formally showcased during the event. Governor Gangwar, the Chief Guest, lauded the organizers and emphasized how such events not only promote sports but also elevate the pride and potential of the region.

“Education and literacy are important, but this event is making not just Jamshedpur, but the entire Jharkhand proud,” the Governor stated. “The Durand Cup is more than a tournament; it is a proud symbol of India’s sporting heritage. Started in 1888, it continues today with the same dignity, thanks to the joint efforts of the Indian Army and the Indian Football Federation.”

Reflecting on the spirit of the tournament and Jharkhand’s role in it, he said, “When the matches of this tournament are held here, it reflects Jharkhand’s self-confidence and youth power. The disciplined tradition of the Army, the craze of the people for football, and the energy of the players make this event unique.”

Highlighting the significance of football in the lives of local youth, the Governor added, “Football is not just a game—it’s an emotion. Our players, through their hard work, rise from the streets to dream of playing on international stages. This is a game that offers equal opportunities—whether one is rich or poor, from a village or a city.”

Governor also spoke about India’s broader vision for sports under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “The revolutionary steps taken in Indian sports in recent years are incomparable. Schemes like Khelo India and Target Olympic Podium Scheme have brought millions of youth into the mainstream of sports.”

He noted that the Central Government had recently approved the National Sports Policy 2025, a strategic initiative to build India into a global sporting superpower. “This policy aims to provide modern training and facilities to players. India is also working towards bidding to host the 2036 Olympic Games. Today, we are not just winning medals—we are excelling in all fields, from hockey and cricket to boxing, athletics, and football.”

Governor Gangwar underscored Jharkhand’s potential to host major sporting events. “The JRD Tata Sports Complex, Tata Football Academy, and facilities like the Birsa Munda Football Stadium in Morabadi prove that Jharkhand is a hub of sports talent and infrastructure.”

He further emphasized the wider socio-economic impact of such tournaments. “This event will not only strengthen sports culture but also promote tourism and local business. The Durand Cup trophies displayed here gives a strong message to every child and ignites a new spark of inspiration.”

Praising the efforts of the organizing institutions, he said, “I wholeheartedly congratulate XLRI and all organizers for this wonderful event. I am confident that Durand Cup 2025 will not only enhance sports spirit but also put Jharkhand firmly on India’s sporting map.”

He concluded his address with an emotional appeal. “Friends, after coming here I truly realized that football beats in the hearts of the youth of this state. Our Prime Minister is deeply committed to promoting sports in India—not just cricket, but every game that can earn international recognition. Let us unite to make this event historic and write a golden chapter of sports inspiration for future generations.”
