Sadar Hospital: On-the-spot review exposes gaps

Jamshedpur: In a proactive move aimed at strengthening public healthcare services, Deputy Commissioner Karn Satyarthi conducted a detailed inspection of Sadar Hospital, Jamshedpur, on Monday. The visit was part of a broader initiative to ensure quality healthcare and accountability in government-run medical institutions across East Singhbhum district.

The Deputy Commissioner began his inspection by visiting various wards of the hospital, including the General Ward, Women Ward, Maternity and Delivery Ward, Children’s Ward, Emergency Room, and the Outpatient Department (OPD). He carefully observed the on-ground situation, taking stock of critical parameters such as sanitation, availability of medicines, staff attendance, and overall upkeep of the facilities.

During the visit, Satyarthi interacted directly with patients and their attendants to understand their experience and access to services. Patients shared their feedback on food quality, medicine availability, timeliness of treatment, and behaviour of hospital staff. The DC patiently listened to their grievances, noting suggestions and complaints. He inquired specifically about delays in tests, unavailability of medicines, and the responsiveness of on-duty doctors and nurses.

Expressing concern over the need to uphold patient dignity and safety, the Deputy Commissioner issued clear directives to Civil Surgeon Dr. Sahir Pal. He instructed that providing quality healthcare must remain the top priority of the hospital administration. “Every health worker, from doctors to support staff, must perform their duties with integrity and empathy. We must ensure that no patient is left unattended or suffers due to negligence,” he said.

The Deputy Commissioner emphasised the importance of hygiene, especially in high-risk areas like the emergency and maternity wards. He directed that cleanliness be maintained on a regular basis and that proper systems for waste disposal, drinking water supply, and functioning of medical equipment be strictly monitored.

Accompanying him during the inspection were ACMO Dr. Jogeshwar Prasad, DRCHO Dr. Ranjit Panda, and other senior medical officers. The presence of the top health officials reflected the administration’s seriousness in improving service delivery at the grassroots level.

Civil Surgeon Dr. Pal assured the Deputy Commissioner that follow-up actions will be taken on all the issues identified during the visit. He also mentioned that efforts are underway to streamline OPD operations and ensure uninterrupted supply of essential drugs.

“ As government hospitals continue to serve as lifelines for thousands, especially the underprivileged, the Deputy Commissioner’s visit sent a strong message about the district administration’s commitment to accessible and accountable public healthcare. The inspection concluded with a renewed call to uphold medical ethics and operational excellence at all levels,” noted an official.
