Jamshedpur: Betel shop owner arrested for running illegal lottery

Jamshedpur, Jan 17: Police arrested a betel shop owner at Galudih for allegedly running an illegal lottery. They also confiscated cash worth Rs 20.89 lakh from his possession along with 1198 lottery tickets and other material.

The accused, identified as Gautam Mandal, was reportedly selling lottery tickets at the Galudih Anchalik Maidan.

According to SSP Prabhat Kumar, “We had got a tip-off about the accused selling lottery tickets by the accused. A team raided the betel shop and arrested him. Five note books containing details of the lottery have been seized from the shop. Raids are on to nab the prime accused.”

The SSP said the lottery being sold as ‘Nagaland lottery’ was being conducted digitally. The accused persons had made a WhatsApp group which used to issue lottery numbers.  Payments were accepted through both online and offline mode, he said.

The SSP appealed to citizens to inform police about illegal activities, such as drugs or lottery sale.
