Jamshedpur: In a significant step towards eco-friendly urban sanitation, six battery-operated vehicles for door-to-door garbage collection were inaugurated under the initiative of Saryu Roy. The vehicles were procured through the MLA Local Area Development Fund and formally flagged off by the Jamshedpur West MLA at the JNCA office premises.
The inauguration ceremony began with the traditional breaking of a coconut in the presence of JNCA Deputy Municipal Commissioner Krishna Kumar and other officials. A total expenditure of ₹14.70 lakh was incurred for the procurement of the six battery-operated vehicles.
With this initiative, Jamshedpur has become the first city in Jharkhand to deploy battery-operated vehicles for door-to-door garbage collection. The newly introduced vehicles are expected to significantly improve waste collection services, particularly in densely populated areas and narrow lanes where larger vehicles often face difficulty in accessing households.
Speaking on the occasion, Saryu Roy said the idea was inspired by a visit to Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh a few years ago, where he observed battery-operated vehicles being effectively used for garbage collection. Impressed by the model, he discussed the concept with JNCA officials after returning to Jamshedpur, which eventually led to the implementation of the project.
He stated that the use of battery-operated vehicles is the need of the hour, especially when there is a nationwide appeal for conserving petrol and diesel. He further said that such vehicles are beneficial in every aspect as they operate without conventional fuel and also help reduce pollution.
Roy expressed hope that other municipal bodies across Jharkhand would also adopt similar eco-friendly systems for sanitation services. According to him, the introduction of these vehicles will not only improve operational efficiency but also strengthen efforts toward sustainable urban development and cleaner cities.
