Ranchi: In a major move expected to accelerate construction activity and eliminate the ongoing sand shortage across Jharkhand, the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) has granted environmental clearance (EC) to 35 sand ghats spanning 10 districts.
The approved sand mining zones cover a massive collective area of approximately 192.99 hectares. Beyond fulfilling the high local demand for legitimate building materials, this breakthrough is anticipated to deal a heavy blow to the illegal sand market while significantly boosting the state treasury’s revenue.
District-Wise Approvals Realignment
According to the Department of Mines and Geology, East Singhbhum has secured the largest single mining block allocation. A total of three ghats in the district have been cleared, accounting for a staggering 85.40 hectares of the overall approved area. Bokaro district follows next, with two of its sand ghats receiving clearances over a combined expanse of 30.86 hectares.
The distribution of the remaining newly cleared sand ghats across the state includes:
- Hazaribagh: 6 ghats
- Dumka: 5 ghats
- Godda: 4 ghats
- Latehar: 4 ghats
- Ranchi (Silli Block): 3 ghats
- Jamtara: 3 ghats
- Ramgarh: 3 ghats
- Khunti: 2 ghats
Lease Deeds Signed; Operations to Begin Soon
To ensure immediate mobilization, District Collectors in five key districts—namely Godda, Jamtara, Ranchi, Bokaro, and Jamshedpur (East Singhbhum)—have already completed and signed the necessary lease deeds for the respective sand ghats and designated stockyards.
Official estimates calculated under regulatory guidelines reveal that the collective annual sand extraction capacity from these 35 newly approved ghats will hover between 3.5 crore and 5 crore cubic feet (CFT).
Real estate experts and government officials believe this injection of legally sourced sand will normalize pricing, meet infrastructure targets, and smoothly revive paused public and private construction projects across Jharkhand.
