Man Arrested in Jamshedpur for Murder of Girlfriend in Odisha

Jamshedpur: In a targeted operation, Odisha Police apprehended Suryakant Swain in Jamshedpur after he allegedly murdered his girlfriend in Jagatsinghpur district just one day after her engagement. The crime, rooted in a five-year relationship that soured over financial disputes and emotional betrayal, has shocked both Jharkhand and Odisha.

Relationship Turns Fatal

Investigations reveal that Suryakant, a private sector employee in Jamshedpur, shared a five-year relationship with the victim, Sasmita Das (also known as Dolly). The couple had reportedly performed a symbolic marriage ceremony in the past. However, a financial dispute involving several lakhs of rupees linked to a house construction recently strained their bond.

The situation reached a breaking point on April 19, when Sasmita became engaged to another man from Bhadrak. Driven by rage and the ongoing monetary conflict, Suryakant allegedly plotted the murder for the following day.

Execution and Flight

On April 20, Suryakant misled his family by claiming he was returning to Jamshedpur for work. Instead, he stayed behind to execute his plan. Around 8:00 PM, he called Sasmita to meet him. Call Detail Records (CDR) indicate the two engaged in a heated argument before he lured her onto his motorcycle.

Suryakant took her to a deserted field near Jogdhari village, where he allegedly slit her throat with a sharp weapon. Immediately after the killing, the accused fled to Jamshedpur to hide and evade arrest.

Investigation and Remand

The discovery of Sasmita’s body in the secluded field sparked local outrage. Following a formal complaint by the victim’s father, Pramod Das, Odisha Police tracked Suryakant to the steel city.

Officials are currently awaiting medical reports to confirm if a sexual assault occurred during the crime. The accused remains in custody on transit remand, and police expect to recreate the crime scene shortly as the investigation continues.
