Jamshedpur: Dev Krishna Suman, a 23-year-old from the small village of Gosaidih in Bundu, has scripted a global breakthrough by securing a prestigious international placement in Hong Kong. The journey from a modest household in Jharkhand to a monthly salary of ₹2.08 lakh highlights the transformative impact of skill-based education provided by ITI Tamar and the Tata Steel Foundation (TSF).
Foundations of Success
The son of a private school teacher and a mother who supported the family through stitching, Dev proved his merit early by ranking in the top 10 of the Jharkhand Board exams in 2018. To fund his studies at St. Xavier Inter College, he taught local students, balancing his own education with financial independence.
In 2020, Dev enrolled in the Turner trade at ITI Tamar. Established by TSF in collaboration with the Jharkhand Government, the institute specifically targets rural youth. Despite the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dev’s discipline earned him an initial campus placement at CTC India and later an apprenticeship at RKFL, Jamshedpur.
The Global Leap
Between 2023 and 2025, Dev mastered complex CNC programming and various industrial machine operations. His proactive approach led to a promotion and, ultimately, a competitive interview for a position in Hong Kong. Dev emerged as the sole candidate to clear the rigorous selection process conducted at TSTI, Burmamines.
In 2026, he joined VSC Construction Steel Solutions Ltd. in Hong Kong. His package includes a high salary along with fully supported travel and accommodation, a feat his father, Budheshwar Gorai, describes as a “sense of fulfillment” the family never dared to imagine.
A Growing International Footprint
Dev became the 38th trainee from ITI Tamar to secure a placement with this specific Hong Kong firm, reinforcing the institute’s credibility with global industry partners. “Dev’s journey reflects what consistent effort and the right guidance can achieve,” noted Vishal Anand, Principal of ITI Tamar.
Captain Amitabh, Head of Skill Development at Tata Steel Foundation, added: “When young people from smaller towns step into global roles, it inspires others to believe that such opportunities are within reach. That is where real change begins.”
To date, ITI Tamar has trained 979 youth—84% from marginalized categories—maintaining an impressive 96% placement rate.
