Jamshedpur: Armed criminals shot at a jeweler, identified as Partho Pramanik, in his shop at Kadma Market on Saturday evening in a foiled bid to loot jewelry and cash, police said.
Police said five persons entered Mahalaxmi Jewelers, situated in the heart of Kadma Market, and demanded cash and jewelry from Pramanik after taking him at gun point. When the shop owner tried to raise an alarm, the culprits shot him in his leg from close range and decamped without succeeding in their attempt to commit dacoity, police said.
The injured jeweler was taken to Tata Main Hospital where his condition was reportedly out of danger.
During investigation, the jeweler told police he had seen three of the assailants yesterday at his shop. The three had come to the shop in the guise of customers, but bought nothing. They had told Pramanik they would come again on Saturday.
Investigators said they were trying to trace the accused persons on the basis of their physical appearance as told by the victim. Former Jamshedpur West MLA Banna Gupta too, reached the scene and inquired about the incident. He demanded speedy investigation into the incident and safety for the shop owners, especially jewelers.
Police lodged an FIR against five unidentified persons in this connection.
