Jamshedpur: Approval for three new motor sets for Mango drinking water project

Jamshedpur: The Jharkhand government has approved the purchase of three new motor pump sets for the Mango drinking water project. This decision came on March 3, 2025, following a query raised by Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy in the Jharkhand Assembly.

MLA Roy had questioned the Drinking Water and Sanitation Department regarding the prolonged failure of most motor pumps installed at the intake well, treatment plant and storage tanks. He pointed out that no new motor pumps had been purchased since the project’s inception, resulting in inefficiencies in water supply.

Responding to his concerns, Drinking Water and Sanitation Minister Yogendra Prasad assured that the department has sanctioned the procurement of three new motor pump sets to restore the project’s full operational capacity and ensure a steady supply of drinking water to all houses in Mango.

In a separate question to the Urban Development Department, MLA Roy highlighted the issue of increased fees for obtaining drinking water connections. He argued that the lack of a clear definition of families living below the poverty line (BPL) was preventing eligible beneficiaries from availing free connections. Additionally, he questioned the government’s decision to impose higher charges on consumers residing in homes exceeding 1,000 square feet.

In response, the government stated that a committee has been formed to review the installation fees and provide a report within two weeks. The committee’s recommendations will guide amendments to the existing regulations to ensure fair and inclusive access to water connections.
