Jamshedpur all set to host Tata Steel AITA Men’s National Tennis tournament from today

56 players representing 15 states to participate

Jamshedpur, May 5: Tata Steel All India Tennis Association (AITA) National Ranking Men’s Tennis Championship will kick off at JRD Tata Sports Complex, Jamshedpur on Monday, May 6.

The second edition of the Tennis Tournament 2024 will be held between May 6 to 10 at the Complex’ newly constructed Deco Turf courts.

The Qualifying Rounds are already in progress and the final results were declared late on Sunday evening.

The tournament, last held in June 2023, will be held for Men’s category and players born till 31st of December 2009 are eligible to participate, said All India Tennis Association’s (AITA) eastern region representative Rishi Wilson.

Addressing a press meet at JRD Sports Complex on Sunday, Rishi said, “The tournament, which promises five days of intense tennis action, will witness the participation of 56 players representing 15 states across the nation. With two categories on the roster, Men’s Singles and Men’s Doubles, competitors will vie for top honors and cash prizes.”

JRD Tata Sports Complex, a venue that has hosted numerous State as well as National Ranking Tennis Championships between 2004 – 2011 have witnessed some of the current top pros in the circuit, namely  Sumit Nagal & S K Mukund who have already served the nation as Davis Cuppers, playing for India.

Rishi stated that winners in the singles category will earn a significant 20 national ranking points, while doubles champions will secure 15 national ranking points. Additionally, finalists will also receive recognition, with 15 national ranking points awarded in singles and 10 points in doubles.

The tournament will follow the guidelines laid down by the “All India Tennis Association (AITA)”.

The Draw composition will be as follows:-

       MAIN DRAW                   QUALIFYING DRAW

Qualifying Draw remains open for registered players from all over the country. All matches from the Main Draw will be of 3 Tie-Break Sets.

Participants from 15 different states have entered into this tournament, like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Delhi, Telangana, Chattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, Nagaland, Bihar, Odisha, Manipur apart from the host State of Jharkhand. The championship has attracted approximately 60 entries, coming from different corners of the country.

Furthermore, a substantial prize pool of Rs 1 lakh will be distributed among the players.

According to tournament officials, the singles champion will walk away with a prize purse of Rs. 12,500, while the runner-up will receive Rs. 8,400. In the Men’s Doubles category, the winning pair will be awarded Rs. 6,200, with the finalists earning Rs. 3,800.

Excitement is palpable as the matches are not confined to the JRD Tata Sports Complex alone; 25% of the matches will also unfold at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Adityapur, which boasts its own Deco Turf Court.

Two players from Jharkhand, already entered into the tournament are Dev Sinha and Priyansh Agarwal. Sinha is in the Main Draw and is Ranked at 130 in India whereas Priyansh failed to qualify for the main draw, informed Rishi

Rishi further said that Ex Davis Cupper, V M Ranjeet, currently Ranked at 13 in India, has entered into the tournament and will be the top seed in the Men’s Singles category.

Abhinansu Borthakur, winner of numerous AITA Men’s titles and also the winner of the last edition of Men’s National Ranking Tennis Tournament, held at the Beldih Club in November 2023, will be seen in action.

Matches are scheduled from 7:30 am to 12:00 noon, with the action resuming from 3:00 pm onwards each day. Schedule of Match will be prepared by 6:00 pm every evening for the next day.

Mukul Choudhari, Chief Sports Excellence Centres and Sports, Tata Steel said that inauguration ceremony of the championship will be held on May 6 at 11:00 am at JFC Hospitality, JRD Tata Sports Complex in the presence of Ritu Raj Sinha, Managing Director, Tata Steel UISL as Chief Guest.

Also present at the press meet were Bipul Kumar and Vibhuti D Adesara, Head Sports (Training Centres and Events) Tata Steel.
